Why I Left Audit to Start a Bookkeeping Service for S$3

Why I left audit to start a bookkeeping service? After 10 years, I saw micro businesses overcharged for messy books. BookJobs was born — at just S$3 per transaction.

Hi, I'm Charles.

I spent 10 years as an auditor — both external and internal — walking into businesses of all sizes, digging through their financial records, and finding out what went wrong.

And after a decade of doing this, I noticed something that kept me up at night.

It was never the big corporations that suffered the most. It was always the small ones. The sole proprietor running a F&B stall. The freelancer juggling five clients. The micro business owner who started something out of passion — not because they loved spreadsheets.

Every time a tax authority came knocking, the story was the same: messy books.

Not fraud. Not bad intentions. Just messy books — transactions unrecorded, bank statements unreconciled, receipts stuffed in a drawer. And the consequences? Painful, expensive, and completely avoidable.

The problem I couldn't ignore

In 2023, I made a decision. I stepped away from audit and started doing bookkeeping directly for small and micro businesses.

I wanted to be on the other side of the table — not the one uncovering the mess, but the one preventing it.

What I found shocked me. Not just the state of the books — but the price people were being charged to fix them.

Established firms were billing micro businesses thousands of dollars a year for bookkeeping work that, honestly, didn't justify the fees. Monthly retainers regardless of transaction volume. Hidden charges buried in fine print. Clients paying for a service they barely understood, delivered by someone they barely spoke to.

I've sat across from enough clients in audit to know what that feels like from their side. It's a nightmare.

Why I built BookJobs

I had one simple, maybe naïve thought:

"What if bookkeeping was priced the way it should be — based on actual work done?"

A business with 30 transactions a month should not pay the same as one with 300. A sole proprietor in Malaysia should have access to the same quality of bookkeeping as a company in the UK. And every client — no matter how small — deserves clean, accurate, tax-ready accounts without being overcharged for them.

So in 2026, I registered BookJobs.

One service. One price. S$3 per bank or cash transaction.

No monthly fees. No hidden charges. No contracts. Just straightforward bookkeeping, done properly, delivered to you wherever you are in the world.

Who BookJobs is for

BookJobs is built specifically for micro and small businesses with a turnover below S$500,000 — the ones that traditional accounting firms often overlook, or worse, overcharge.

If you are a freelancer, a sole proprietor, a small online business, or a micro company that simply needs clean books for tax compliance — without paying a fortune for it — you are exactly who I built this for.

A promise from me personally

I know what bad bookkeeping costs. I've seen it destroy cash flow, trigger tax penalties, and turn a profitable small business into a stressful one.

I also know what fair pricing looks like — because I've spent years watching what unfair looks like.

BookJobs exists because every micro business deserves a fighting chance. Clean books shouldn't be a luxury. And peace of mind at tax time shouldn't cost more than the tax itself.
